12 November 2019 The 'This time it's personal' Howwow

What's it all about?

There’s no getting away from it – whether you’re an in-house or outsourced paraplanner, starting out in your career or leading teams, working with internal facing or spending time with clients – you’re going to work with people. At some point during your day, week or month, you’ll be communicating with someone. And you’ll want your interactions to be positive, fulfilling and successful. Ultimately, you’ll need the relationships you build to be productive in order to do your job well. So, what steps can you take to build positive relationships that help you flourish and achieve your career goals?

Funny you should ask. We may just have the answer. How does a full day’s Howwow on interpersonal skills sound to you? Interesting? Read on…

What’s in it for you?

Taking place on 12 November, the ‘This time it’s personal’ Howwow gives you an opportunity to work with and learn alongside fellow paraplanners in order to lift your interpersonal skills to the next level.

The skills you learn and the action plans you create will help you work more effectively with your colleagues – whether that’s the people you manage, the people who manage you or the people you work with. They’ll stand you in good stead in the other relationships and conversations you have – perhaps with clients, service providers or peers within the industry.

If you needed further convincing, this LinkedIn article contains some compelling arguments. What’s more, in their
2019 Global Talent Trends Report they report that 92% of talent professionals and hiring managers agree that candidates with strong soft skills are increasingly important.

The day and follow up

Over the course of the day, you’ll work in small tribes, alongside our experienced Gurus and your fellow paraplanners. Working in tribes, makes the day very interactive with plenty of opportunities to raise and create action plans for the problems and questions you have in real life. The Gurus work along-side you on the day to encourage, guide and motivate you to develop your skills.

You’ll go back to work with an action plan to implement. To keep you on track, a month or so after the event, we’ll  invite you to join us on an online Howwow to explore how you’re getting on with your actions.

Learning outcomes

You’ll learn and create an action plan to….

  1. Communicate with confidence, influence and assertiveness, appreciating how to engage successfully with different personalities in order to build and develop strong, empathic relationships
  2. Develop trusting, respectful and effective working relationships in order to give and receive meaningful feedback. Give feedback to challenge effectively and use the feedback you receive to take action to develop yourself and others
  3. Elevate your role by helping those you work with to truly understand what you do, how you do it and the value you bring to client relationships

You’ll be in a room full of paraplanners – all of whom want to share how they go about building positive and productive relationships – we’ll make sure there’s plenty of time to fix, learn and share together because that’s how we roll at the Powwow!

Your gurus

We don’t use the term ‘gurus’ lightly – our carefully assembled Guru Team – have worked across the industry, with and within large and small businesses. They’ve worked with team managers and team members. They’ve provided guidance to people starting out in their careers through to those leading the business. They’ve helped members of larger teams and people who work on their own. They understand paraplanners, what they do and the challenges they face but they come with open minds, no stereotypes and a desire to help you build your own solutions.

Soft skills Howwow

Rachael Hurdman

Your lead guru is Rachael Hurdman. Rachael is the Founder and Director of Arch inspire Limited and a Powwow contributor, participating in our online Howwow on paraplanning teams.

As a Business Coach and Consultant, Rachael works with SME’s, Corporate businesses and Private clients at board, team and individual level with a specialist knowledge of Financial Services.

Rachael has over 20 years’ experience within Financial Services working for Standard Life, AXA and Aegon.  Today she works with clients supporting them in the following areas:

– Business and personal growth

– Leadership and executive coaching and mentoring

– Leadership, managment and sales skills training and development

– Culture and team development

She has vast experience and expertise in building, leading, managing, mentoring and coaching teams and works closely with Paraplanner teams and managers within Financial Services.

Len Horridge

Rachael is ably supported by two further gurus and Len is one of them!

Len started work with Unilever, Philips and 3M before he left to work in consulting in Financial Services in 1989. He started his own company, The Skills Exchange in 1998 which delivered all types of technical training but started to focus on the psychological side of business and the people within it, looking at pragmatic solutions to help develop people.

Most of Len’s work now is in training, coaching and mentoring across industries and as well as most financial services companies he has been involved with major projects with BetFred, Yodel, Speedy Hire and some major retailers and house builders. Communication and motivation are common themes in these but he works across the spectrum of interpersonal skills.

Sarah Purves

Lastly but by no means least, Sarah will join Rachael and Len.

Sarah has worked as a Learning & Development Consultant for the last four years at Aegon UK. She supports a variety of stakeholders on many different subjects such as technical subject training, induction courses and support with exams but her passion really comes from supporting people in their personal development. The part Sarah enjoys most is getting people to recognise their capability, to look at where they are now and how to step out of their comfort zones.

Q&A: When, where and how much?

We’ll start at 9am on 12 November 2019 and proceedings will draw to an end at 5pm.

At the lovely offices of Seven Investment Management. Just head to 3rd Floor, 55 Bishopsgate, London EC2N 3AS.

It’ll finish at about 5pm.

You can book your place by clicking the big ‘BOOK NOW’ button on this page.

We’re giving you the option of two ticket prices – £30 or £50 for a ticket. You get the same no matter what price you pay. This Howwow is supported by Aegon, DD|Hub and 7IM but sometimes we want to spend a little more in order to deliver the best event we can. That’s where ticket sales come in. We don’t mind (and we won’t judge) what ticket price you go for, but if you should plump to pay £50, then it will give us just a little more cash to play with for this and future events.

Powwows have been created by paraplanners for paraplanners. If you’re not a paraplanner – or a guest invited by a Powwow organiser – then the Howwow’s not for you.

Supported by…

Unwaveringly independent though it is, the ‘This time it’s personal’ Howwow is only possible with the generous help of our supporters.
